HISTORY IN BRIEF

1300

Beginning of a worshipping area for the faith community. A Stone Cross and later, a small Chapel were built.

1544

Visit of St. Francis Xavier, and his missionary activities & conversion strengthened the church at Vettucaud.

1550

Vettucaud St. Anne's Chapel comes under the care of Diocese of Cochin, because the coastal area in Trivandrum was under Padrovado rule, contract of Portugal with the Holy See for evangelisation.

1568

The parish name Vettucaud was mentioned in Mission Report sent to Rome, in which it was grouped with Raythura or Rajathura.

1890

Vettucaud faith community was established as a Parish. Parish Priest was appointed for the pastoral care of the faithful.

1892

The renovation works begun and the facelift with Gothic style.

1917

A Primary School was begun with the Name St. Mary's, at Vettucaud.

1920

St. Mary's Sports Club was established. Football and other sports activities were guided under it.

1937

The blessing of the renewed church after the completion of the church bell tower and new altar.

1937

July 1: Establishment of the Diocese of Trivandrum, bifurcating Quilon diocese.

1942

Fr Hilary, the native first priest's parents offered the Christ The King Statue, and its consecration was done by Cochin Bishop Jose Viera Alvarnez.

1948

St. Mary's Library was begun to enhance the literary skills of the people at Vettucaud.

1950

Mystical Rose Convent was begun and the Congregation of Teresian Carmelite sisters community was established by the Diocesesan Bishop for the assistance of pastoral ministry at Vettucaud.

1952

The school begun decades ago was raised to St. Mary's High School. Students could complete SSLC.

1955

End of Padrovado system. Vettucaud parish was annexed to the Diocese of Trivandrum together with other parishes at costal area, which were under Cochin diocese.

1982

Christ the King Padapooja, a special devotion like Novena was written by parish priest Fr. G. Stephen, and begun to pray every Fridays evening at 7 o' clock.

1983

Ceremonial Flag Hoisting was begun for the Christ The King Feast with flower-filled ground and flowers dropped from training flight.

1984

Formation of the Parish Council changed the administrative phase, which included more lay people participation and work.

1989

Christ The King Community Hall was built for social gatherings, wedding parties, parish training programmes etc.

1990

BCC Units were begun at Vettucaud as per the guidelines of Trivandrum Diocese and the council became a representative body from it.

1992

New Parochial House was built for better facilities to priests and office functioning.

2004

Diocese of Trivandrum elevated to Archdiocese of Trivandrum.

2017

Renovation of Christ The King Shrine.

2018

Consecration of the Renovated Church.

2024

Inauguration of Christus Rex Chapel, Corpus Christi Adoration Chapel, and Vettucaud Church Museum.
